Photograph the pet at their own eye level
Choose a sharp picture where the eyes, ears and face are easy to see. A photo taken at the pet’s level often tells you more about their expression than a distant shot from above. For dark fur, use soft daylight so the features do not disappear into shadow. Avoid a moving pet, a lead crossing the face or a close wide-angle nose that hides the rest of the head.
Keep the pet’s character in the design
Select dog or cat to suit your subject, then choose original photo for the familiar image or a 3D toon for a playful illustrated portrait. Check markings and distinctive ears in the preview before approving it. Paws with mint makes a cheerful starting point, but the owner’s favourite colour can be just as personal. Try ‘Birthday boss’, ‘Biscuit inspector’ or ‘Still in charge’ if the joke reflects that particular pet.
Mark a birthday or a gotcha day without guessing
For a rescue pet, the arrival date may be the day the family celebrates. You can write ‘Happy gotcha day’ without inventing a birth date or age. If the owner prefers a keepsake for everyday use, just the pet’s name may be enough. PickleDodo’s 11oz ceramic mugs cost £15 including VAT, with free UK delivery in 1–2 working days.
